SEX: We live in a culture which does not have a healthy attitude to sex at all. The pressures, particularly on women, not to have sex. To set a high premium on virginity, and to link sexual activity with character means that women routinely deny themselves sexual pleasure. It is important to change that culture and for women to experience the pleasures and health benefits of sex.


Heterosexual men too are denied sex, not least because women are not willing to have sex outside marriage. Casual sex is a taboo and circumstances and spaces are sparse.


In this unhealthy culture, it is difficult to even think of sex. Let alone enjoy it without fear and guilt and all sorts of unnecessary baggage.


Yet it is well-known that sex is good for you. It makes you feel good and it feels really good. It is the expression of love for another body, another mind. Consensual sex is one of the most beautiful acts of union between humans.


Scientific research has highlighted several possible benefits of Sex. Like preserving heart health, reducing blood pressure and boosting immunity apart from improving mood, relationships and mental well-being. A 2016 study found that sexually active women have a lower risk of cardiac events later in life. The study also measured blood pressure as one of the markers and found that women who expressed satisfaction with their sex lives were less likely to have high blood pressure

While having sex, one’s body produces higher levels of immunoglobulin (IgA), an antibody which helps prevent colds and flu. Those germs most often enter the body, through mucosal linings. Sex triggers the release of oxytocin, endorphins and other “feel-good” hormones which may be responsible for the stress-reducing effect on cortisol levels. Cortisol, a hormone that acts in a response to stress.  


In the time of a virus which is doing just that, sex becomes one of the ways to fight back. Having more sex – safe sex, of course – is actually one of the ways to beat this virus.
